Alright, let’s cut to the chase: should you hit the books at uni or dive into a trade? Both have their perks, but it all boils down to what you want out of life and what you’re good at. So, let’s break it down and help you figure out what’s best for you.
The Old School vs. New School
Before unis were even a thing, trades like blacksmithing, carpentry, and masonry were the go-to. Folks learned their craft through apprenticeships, keeping society ticking and making sure we all had the stuff we needed.
Fast forward to today, and tradies like HD mechanics and fitters can get into the game fast and start raking in the cash sooner. After a three-year apprenticeship, you could be making some serious money — especially in mining, where pay can hit up to $250,000. According to the Australian Financial Review, being a tradie can sometimes be a better gig than going to uni, thanks to high demand and solid pay.
Uni Life
On the flip side, uni can open up a heap of opportunities, help you build a network, and give you a solid platform for personal growth. Aussies with a bachelor’s degree have the lowest unemployment rates and pull in more cash. Money Magazine reckons degree holders earn 42% more than folks who didn’t finish year 12 and land full-time jobs quicker. If you’ve got a postgraduate degree, you could be earning double compared to someone who only finished year 11 or less.
Job Market Trends
The latest Labour Market Study from March 2024 shows that most new jobs coming up will need a post-graduate education. Jobs needing a degree or advanced diploma are growing the fastest, and the ones needing less education are on the decline. So, if you’re after a good job, uni is still a solid bet.
Don’t Forget the Trades
But don’t think being a tradie is a dead end. There’s always a need for skilled workers, and employers are keen on practical skills and experience. The 2024 Labour Market Study says skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and tech know-how are in demand across all fields.
Richard recently discussed this on episode 12 of The Dirt and made a great point: after spending years at uni, you might end up with a job like a GP earning $150,000. But if you jump into a trade, like being an HD mechanic or fitter, you could start making around $85 an hour and hit up to $250,000 in the mines. It’s worth considering if you’re not set on uni.

Which Path to Choose?
At the end of the day, both uni degrees and trade skills are crucial for keeping things running smoothly. Do your homework and pick the path that suits you best. Keep an eye on industry trends and remember, you can always upskill if you want to switch things up down the track.
Success can come from either path, and the right choice is the one that fits your interests and goals.
