Are Job Boards Hiding Jobs from You?
No, SEEK’s not hiding jobs from you, but it’s not gonna show you all the jobs you could have either.
SEEK’s algorithms are designed to figure out which jobs are most relevant to your search criteria. So, if you’re searching for jobs in mining, you won’t always see every job in that industry. And if you can’t find them, you’ll miss out on better opportunities.
You can still find these jobs, but you’ll have to look a little harder – like visiting industry-specific websites or job boards hosted by mining companies.
In fact, here are 3 tips to help you find the best jobs:
1. Doing a Boolean Search
Know it sounds a bit fancy, but it’s actually not. A boolean search is used to find results faster and more precisely. When doing a boolean, you need to use the words AND, OR, and NOT. These help search engines narrow down or broaden search results.
- “AND” narrows results by requiring both terms, like; mining and driller
- “OR” broadens results by including either term, e.g.; mining or drilling
- “NOT” excludes the second term, narrowing results, such as; mining not drilling
- Use Parentheses to prioritise terms, like; mining AND (driller OR offsider)
- Use Quotes to group words together in order. E.g.; “mining driller”
2. Narrow Down Your Search Using Sub-Classifications
Mining is a diverse field with various sub-classifications. Narrowing down your search to specific categories within the industry allows for a more targeted approach. This method ensures you explore opportunities aligned with your expertise and preferences.

3. Use a Specialist Agency
While general job boards like SEEK or Indeed post thousands of jobs on their platforms every day, specialist agencies offer a unique advantage. Agencies like Aston Advantage specialise in the mining sector, providing access to exclusive opportunities that might not be widely advertised. Looking through their job boards might increase your chances of discovering hidden gems in the job market.
